Drill Tools
Drill tools are found in nearly every tool collection. The ability to make a hole in something is the foundation of many craft and construction projects. Drill tools come in many forms for different purposes and budgets.
Drilling tools include hand drill tools, drill press tools, power tools drills, drill press tools, and cordless drill tools. Each type of drill has its own uses and its own accessories -- mainly drill bits, the cutting tools that it into a chuck (clamping holder) on the business end of a drill.
Hand drill bits are used in geared, hand-cranked drills. They are considered quaint antiques, but hand drills are very useful in drilling delicate pieces of exotic wood that might shatter under the vibrations of an electric power drill. Hand drills are also used with very fine bits to drill holes through fragile beads and gems.
Power tool drills are more popular than hand drills. A power drill tool is a hand-held electric motor with a drill chuck mounted on the business end. Power drills are not only used for drilling. With an appropriate attachment, a power drill can become a rotary sander, a polisher with a buffing pad, a paint stirrer, a carbide cutting saw, and many other rotating tools.
Cordless drills are powered by rechargeable batteries. The voltage of the battery determines how much torque or drilling power a cordless drill has. Cordless drills come in voltages of 12v, 18v, and 24v. The rechargeable battery is based on either nickel-cadmium or lithium ion technology.
A drill press tool is a drill mounted on a stable, vertical metal slide that gives the craftsman perfect control over the placement and depth of holes. The drill can be lowered and raised to make very precise holes through whatever material is clamped to the table beneath it. The table can be tilted and locked at any angle to enable drilling of angled holes through a flat piece. A drill press and a V-shaped table accessory can be used to drill holes through the diameter of a cylindrical piece. Drill press tools are typically mounted to a work table top with bolts to provide great stability.
Drill tools can be used to make holes in wood, metal, plastic, stone, brick, or just about any material. Drills are used to make the cylinders of automobiles and tunnels through mountains. Fire drills use a blunt "bit" to generate heat through friction and ignite tinder. The many uses of drill tools make the drill one of the most valuable of tools.
